Yesterday, the medical team led by Prof. Xie Qiang from the Minimally Invasive Center successfully performed ablation surgery of liver metastases from colorectal cancer for a patient. He recovered quickly and felt well, and he can back to normal life on the second day after the surgery.

Colorectal cacner patient with systemic multiple metastases.Expert: about 3 months of survival period

The story started two years ago.

In June 2019, Mr. Wang, who lives in the Northeast, underwent colonoscopy and was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer due to recurrent abdominal pain. He went to 3A hospitals in Harbin and Beijing for further examination, which showed colon cancer with multiple metastases in lungs, liver, bone, lymph nodes, and extensive peritoneal metastases. He was evaluated to survive for around 3 months only, and was advised to seek further treatment in Guangdong.

Therefore, he and his wife decided to try to seek further treatment in Guangzhou, and they came to visit Prof. Xie Qiang, the director of the Minimally Invasive Center of Guangzhou Royallee Cancer Center.

Miracle Made by A Famous Doctor Breaks Life Expectancy!

From July 2019 to July 2020, under the professional and systemic guidance of Prof. Xie, Mr. Wang has received comprehensive therapies including chemotherapy, surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and biological cell therapy. After that, his disease condition is effectively controlled, and he has returned to normal life. So far, he has survived for over 2 years with a good quality of life, breaking the life expectancy of less than half a year.

In September of this year, two new metastatic lesions appeared in the liver during a routine examination. Mr. Wang visited Prof. Xie again.

With rich experience in minimally invasive treatment, the medical team led by Prof. Xie, in cooperation with Pain Anesthesiology Department and Medical Imaging Department, successfully performed the microwave ablation surgery under the guidance of CT, effectively and accurately eliminating the liver metastases. During the operation, the equipment technicians praised: “I have witnessed many operations in major hospitals, but this is the perfect one I have ever witnessed.”

At present, Mr. Wang gets back to normal life and he is in fine fettle. His attending physician said that he can be discharged from the hospital at any time.

Microwave ablation

Microwave ablation is to percutaneously puncture a microwave needle into the central area of the tumor under the guidance of CT or ultrasound. The released microwave magnetic field will cause the surrounding molecules to rotate at a high speed and heat up by friction. The protein of tumor cells will denature and coagulate under the high temperature, thereby causing necrosis of the diseased tissue. At the same time, inactivated tumor tissue can produce heat stock proteins to stimulate the body’s immune system and to improve immune function, so as to inhibit the spread of tumor cells.

Microwave ablation can be used for the treatment of solid tumors such as liver cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer, and it can also strengthen the curative effect and expand its adaptability when it is combined with other treatments, such as transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE)
